The Australian Open

The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments which is held in every year. The tournament is held in January at Melbourne Park and it was held for the first time in 1905 and was also last contested on grass in 1987. The tournament has been held on hard courts at Melbourne Park since 1988. Mats Wilander who is the only person to have won the tournament on both grass and hard courts.

Like all other Grand Slam tournaments, there are men's and women's singles competitions; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; and junior's, wheelchair, exhibition, and legends' competitions.The Australian Open and Wimbledon both are the only Grand Slam tournaments with indoor play.

The Australian Open held in the middle of the Australian summer and it can have enormously hot days. An enormously– heat-policy is put into play while temperatures reach dangerous levels.

The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, with the 2010 Australian Open achieving the highest ever single-day day/night attendance record for any Grand Slam tournament of 77,043 and an overall attendance of 653,860.

In 2010, the singles winners were Roger Federer and Serena Williams. In men’s doubles, the winners were Bob and Mike Bryan and besides in women’s doubles, the winners were Serena and Venus Williams. It was the second time in history and the second successive year that both Australian Open doubles titles won by siblings. In mixed doubles, the winners were Cara Black and Leander Paes. Grand Slam

The four Grand Slam tournaments are also called the Majors which are the most important tennis events of the year. They are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

A singles player or doubles team those are won all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year is called the “Grand Slam” for achieving this. If the player or team those are won all the four repeatedly, but it is not the same calendar year, called them a “Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam”. Winning all four at some point in a career, though it is not happen repeatedly, is referred to as a “Career Grand Slam”. Winning the four Majors and a gold medal in tennis at the Summer Olympics, it has been being called a “Golden Slam” since 1988 while Steff Graf who became the only person to achieve that deed in a single calendar year. Andre Agassi who is the only other player to achieve a “Golden Slam” but he did not do that in one calendar year. That’s why to call his as a “Career Golden Slam”. (help from wikikpedia)

The Championships Wimbledon

The Wimbledon Championships or simply say Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the soil. It is usually considered the most prestigious tournament which has been held at the All England Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877 and it is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. It is the only one which is still played on the game’s original surface; grass and it gave the game of lawn tennis’ name.

The tournament goes on within two weeks in late June and early July and finishes with the ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles final. The scheduled is respectively for the second Saturday and Sunday. Five major events are contested and four junior events plus four invitational events holding each year.

The hard court Australian Open and the clay court French Open too goes before Wimbledon in the current year. Besides, the hard court US Open also will be preceded. The grass court AEGON Championships will be in London for men and the Gerry Weber Open will be in Halle, Germany that will serve as respective warm-up events. The AEGON Classic will be in Birmingham for women, the UNICEF Open will be in‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and this AEGON International Eastbourne will be served as warm-up events to Wimbledon.

The Boodles Challenge

The Boodless Challenge is an international tennis exhibition which is held at Stoke Park Club in Buckinghamshire, England and the tournament is held over 5 days during the week for preceding Wimbledon. Played in a smilar style to the AAMI Classic giving the players at least 3 matches each and allowing non compition players to appear in 1 match per a day. Over recent years Agassi, Sampras, Henman, Safin, Blake, Roddick, Gonzalez, Nalbandian, Djokovic, Murray and Nadal have all appeared. (help from Wikipedia)

The AEGON International 2010 is a combined men's and women's tennis tournament which one to be played on outdoor grass courts. This will be the 35th edition for the women and besides will be the 2nd edition for the men. This is classified by the WTA Premier tournament and the ATP World Tour 250 series on the WTA/ATP World Tour 2010.The tournament is taken place at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, England and it will be from June 13 to till June 19, 2010. ATP/WTA Unicef Open


UNICEF Open 2010 is a tennis tournament which one played on outdoor grass courts. This is the 21th edition and is the part of the 250 Series of the ATP World Tour 2010. It is also the part of the WTA International Tournaments of the WTA Tour 2010. There both the men's and the women's will take place the events at the Autotron park in Rosmalen, near 's- Hertogenbosch in Netherlands.It will be from June 13 to June 19, 2010.
